VOL 30 REL #45 Universal International NEWS © COPYRIGHT MCMLXIV UNIVERSAL PICTURE COMPANY, INC. UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL NEWS ATOM FALLOUT New Tests Begin As Safety Debate Rages VOICE: ED HERLIHY
Ed Herlihy As dawn breaks over Nevada , a 1957 atomic test series begins. Test followed the 12-day wait for weather conditions, which would keep fallout at a minimum, and scored a complete success. But the series will range from this baby blast with only half the power of the Hiroshima bomb, to the most massive weapon tested on this continent. Background for this series of tests: increasing controversy over the dangers of fallout, with the Atomic Energy Commission coming under mounting criticism both abroad and at home. At stake are grave world issues.
UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL NEWS NEWS IN BRIEF VOICE: ED HERLIHY New York City
Ed Herlihy The breath of another century drifts into the Port of New York with the arrival of the square-rigged, three-masted Norwegian training ship, Christian Radich. Time turns back as the 200-foot vessel sails proudly at the harbor. One of eight square-riggers still in service, the Radich was sunk by the Nazis and re- floated after the war. This is her third New York visit, and on-board are 42 teenage cadets getting their first taste of the sea the old-fashioned way.

Ed Herlihy New York welcomes Captain Kjelstrup , master of the ship, and younger Norwegians who are carrying on in the traditions of the Vikings of old.
Long Island, New York
Ed Herlihy The Air Force plays host to the Third Annual Fire Chief Steel Conference at South Dakota Air Force Base. Dozens of demonstrations culminate with the spectacular simulation of a jet crash in a residential area, with the emphasis on the latest methods of coping with blazing jet fuel. Representatives of Westhampton and 38 other local communities take part with the cooperation of the Air Force--fitting themselves to meet the problems of community safety posed by the increasing tempo of the Air Age.
Maryland
Ed Herlihy Progress on Project Vanguard, which will set an artificial satellite in space circling the Earth, is revealed at the Martin Aircraft Plant in Baltimore . A full-scale model of the 21-inch moon and a model of the Vanguard rocket, the 20,000 ton, three-stage missile that will carry the satellite to its orbit, where it will broadcast priceless scientific data to Earth. The first glimpses ever permitted on the Vanguard assembly line show the mighty rockets nearing completion. Soon, the first will be test-fired; while the actual satellite launching is scheduled before the end of 1958 . A daring first stride into outer space.
Austria
Ed Herlihy It's been a happy spring for the villagers of Rust, Austria , for the storks are back. And this year, more birds than ever before have come back. Nobody knows quite why, but everybody is happy about it; for the stork is an omen of good luck, besides being an ingenious builder of rooftop and chimney top nests and a dedicated parent. Mother is expecting...the stork? Father flies with graceful majesty, neck outstretched, gliding about town on silent wings, on constant guard against intruders. He brings her lunch--not ala carte, ala chimney! It's down the hatch, and then back to his patrol he goes. And I tell you, it is rugged being a bird just before the stork arrives.
Austria
Ed Herlihy From an Austrian laboratory, films of a rare life form: the Actinia, half-plant, half-animal. This is one of the few ever to survive removal from its Indian Ocean habitat. The Actinia has a strange working partnership with the tiny coral fish that dart in and out of its fronds. They bring it food; in return, get shelter and protection--for the tentacles of Actinea are poisonous to all other animals. How do they arrange it? The biggest mystery of all.
UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL NEWSREEL FASHION PARADE
Ed Herlihy Daydreams in design. Inspired by a book about dreams, Mr. John designed a glass hat for summer. It's part of a Milinary Institute showing at New York Waldorf Astoria. Caesar Rubio created this Technicolor dream bonnet based on a premise that a gal's hat is a link between dreams and reality if longings come to life in the hat you wear. Here are some dreams--walking, for instance. A chiffon turban, by Lily Vache . Pagan priests, so the book says, were able to induce visions by administering certain stimuli. Nothing stimulates a woman like a new hat. This one is John Frederic's vision of the Elysian fields. Whether you dig the idea or not, I'm sure you ladies can appreciate the bonnets. And don't you men have any nightmares about prices. Go back to sleep and let the Sandman pay the piper. Speaking of sleep, a gal with that number can shut out the world by simply adjusting the brim. Sweet dreams!
UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL NEWS SPORTS VOICE: ED HERLIHY New York City U-I NEWS
Ed Herlihy Boxing with a pal. Well, it's not that simple, but here are finals of Police Athletic League bouts. And PAL is a big pal to youngsters in the big town. Being amateurs, they're wearing protective headgear but they still absorb plenty of punishments. A former heavyweight boxer, Lou Nova , is at ringside, as George Kingston and Bill Glenn battle for light heavyweight honors. Glenn is getting the best of it, and the ref steps in to stop the fight. Danny Mojika gets going with a flurry against Crawford Brown in the 160-pound class. PAL spells "pal" but not in the ring. Mojika had things his own way at the start, but now it's Brown who's getting the upper hand.
